Category Archives: Book Reviews

harry-potter-and-the-cursed-childFirst things first, you will need to read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, to understand Harry Potter  And The Cursed Child. There are other references too, from Book 1 and Book 2, although in my opinion, it’s not necessary to read those books to understand this theatre play.

Saying that, the majority of persons living on this planet (and those aliens from other planets we have never seen or heard of – who could have downloaded The Cursed Child via their magnificent technology – may have read it too. Hey, it may be true!)

Anyway, I liked the script and yes, I read it in a day! That, to me, is amazing and quite impressive, since I haven’t finished reading a book in ages. What’s the story, I hear you ask.

Well, it’s about two boys called Albus and Scorpius; two friends who are put in the Slytherin house. Albus is Harry and Ginny’s son (they have three in total), and Scorpius is Draco Malfoy’s son. We also get to see the original cast – Harry, Ron, Hermione, with Draco and Ginny.

The story weaves in and out of timelines that is more complicated than the one in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Albus and Scorpius are in the middle of these adventures and accidently on purpose (you will know what I mean) change the present and the future, thus creating an alternative timeline. (It reminded me of Back to the Future…)

I can picture JK Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne going crazy writing this crazy stuff (I said crazy twice, didn’t I?) making sure nothing was missed out!

So, back to the review, I loved the fact that JK Rowling gave us glimpses of Snape, Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore, even if he was in a painting form. At times, I forgot I was reading a script for a theatre play, and thought I was reading a real book.

There are a lot of twists and turns in The Cursed Child, which was a delight to read. You are taken back into the magical world of Hogwarts! However, I will not reveal any spoilers, on no.

So, this was my review. I could go on forever, but then I would be revealing spoilers, and that is just wrong. So if you haven’t already read the play/book, do it now. You won’t be disappointed!

Book Review – The American and The Brit: Unsolicited Advice

I absolutely lUpdated-The-American-and-the-Brit-ebook-full-21oved this book! It had humour, more humour, and stupidity that only the American and Brit could pull off even if they weren’t meant to!

Meet Phoebe and Lizbeth, two girls just like one another, but both from different ends of the pond. Phoebe is an American, and Lizbeth is a Brit. Meeting in a British pub by chance, they hit it off. They became the best of friends and Lizbeth decided to move to America on a work visa and was about to begin a new job at Phoebe’s workplace, when Phoebe managed to screw up!

Luck was on their side, when the girls landed another job quite by accident. They became agony aunts, giving advice to people on the net. Actually, I wouldn’t call it “advice” but more of a telling, just as it is! There is no tiptoeing here, oh no!

Thrown in with the two girls, are a bunch of other characters that are gorgeous, hilarious, and surprising. One character that stuck to my mind, was Hairy Mary. Yep – she is something! So, the girls get up to all sorts in their small world which literally becomes very big overnight. You will laugh with them and laugh at them!

The American and the Brit: Unsolicited Advice is told in the viewpoint of Lizbeth and Phoebe, and I have to tell you, it’s great!

Rose Blood – Curse of the Vial by Georgina Ramsey

51J4KSQ9eWL._SX351_BO1,204,203,200_Today, I want to bring to you of a review of a great book I just read, called Rose Blood by Georgina Ramsey. Here it is!

Rose Blood, Curse of the Vial

This is a story about a vampire named Rose Blood, who was turned from a mortal to an immortal at a very young age. It is also the story of John Blood, her custodian.

Rose Blood is a very engaging story about the beginnings of a mortal turned into an immortal. There are vampires who are monsters, who want to take Rose’s existence from her, and then there are angels in the form of vampires who want to protect the people of Earth from them, and keep Rose safe. Who will win?

I loved the way Georgina Ramsey set the setting straight away in the book. I felt I was in the era of the late nineteenth century. Part of the story is set in the 1800s and revelled ‘being’ in that time. Georgina Ramsey mentions workhouses, and we get a glimpse of what the conditions poor people were forced to work in. Working in a workhouse was the only option for people with little or no money, and that was where Rose Blood was with her mother. Only one day when she sneaked out to see her grandfather, things changed.

We see Rose Blood in the modern day world and during a historical period. This is very important to the story telling, especially when showing the life of a vampire, which Georgina Ramsey has perfected to a T.

One of the other characters in the story is John Blood, who turned Rose into a vampire. He is like a father to her, and he will do anything to make sure she is safe from vampires that like to kill for fun, or to eat.  The reader likes to know the history of vampires, and Georgina Ramsey has touched on subjects that makes us think, one in particular, who was the first vampire?

I thoroughly recommend this book, and I urge you to go and read it!

Carpet Diem by Justin Lee Anderson (A book review)

I loved this quirky story about how a rug is the last link to save Earth or let it be doomed. Yes, you heard right. How is a rug responsible for the fate of our planet? The answer is in fact a simple one which I won’t reveal, for obvious purposes of course!

CMYm00DWEAAatHGThe characters Justin Lee Anderson conjured up are hilarious, some are gorgeous and attractive, and some are just downright hideous! In particularly, the witches. However, more about the characters later.

You see, we are kept guessing throughout the novel what is going to happen, and I can tell you, I was surprised each time the story turned a corner. In this book,  the characters take lead of the tale, and the author plays along.

Justin Lee Anderson’s writing shone as even though he wrote in many viewpoints, it didn’t obstruct the storytelling, and so it flowed quite well. So now to the characters. The ones you must keep a look out for are Simon (the lead), Harriet (Simon’s great aunt), Faunt (a person who turns into a deer for a number of hours a day) and Cherry (she is really nice).  I also like Priest, a clever character and a very powerful one too. He is an exception! To what? Well, you will need to find out yourself!

But what’s the story about, I hear you ask. Well, the story is about a rug that is the catalyst of everything to come from romance scenes to thrilling scenes of murder; (the story can be dark in some places!). The story also has demons, angels, and witches! Remember, I mentioned witches? They are not at all how they look, and not how we have seen them in movies either.

Go now and download this book. I am sure you will love it as I did! This is from a reader who couldn’t put the book down and was reading until the small hours of the morning – I finished reading at 4.30am!

EXODUS by Kenneth G. Bennett – A Review

EXODUS 2022 CoverI have never come across a story like this,  it is unique and one of a kind.
The story is told from several viewpoints – from a marine life and from a number of humans. I found some chapters distressing to read due to bloodshed and violence and the injustice of it all, but this was necessary to the plot! And it only made the story stronger and exhilarating to read.

The story is of an orca-a whale species called Mia who contacts Joe Stanton with her mind. She is on a mission and only he can help. But there is danger and his name is Sheldon Beck, a hardcore soldier who likes to kill. He is a multi-billionaire and revels in the fact that he is feared by everyone. His influence, terrifying as it is, gets him what he wants and he wants Joe.

To  capture  Joe’s thoughts is his aim, through his thought waves, to know what this whale wants and what her plan is. With a team of experts he sets about with this new phenomenal discovery.

Joe Stanton and Ella, his girlfriend,  are a lovely couple but what happened to Joe on on the day Mia contacted him, brought him problems after problems. As they run from Beck and his men, Joe receives messages from Mia and he tries his best to accommodate her wishes.

Going away from the multiple murders and chasing,  we are taken into Mia’s mind and see life from the point of view of a marine animal. There, we feel deeply connected with this blissful whale and we are relaxed in her company,  as we swim with her and her family.

What happens three quarters down the story is extraordinary in itself but what happens later is better still.  In a literal sense, it is out of this world.

The author’s research to bring the story full circle is evident and we can see his hard work through character development and plot structure.

My favourite characters are Mia, the beautiful orca whom I fell in love with, and Joe and Ella, whose relationship is sacrificed. But I won’t tell you how, that is up to you to find out!

A truly phenomenal piece of writing,  I applaud Kenneth G. Bennett. I am hoping there is a sequel as I want to know what happens next!
